Infusion and Injection

Although infusion, injection, and transfusion serve three completely different medical purposes, they have some commonalities. An infusion is used for the continuous administration of liquid medications. It is often used after surgery, for example, when liquid antibiotics need to be administered intravenously. Painkillers can also be given to patients in this way easily and with minimal effort. The term "infusion" derives from the Latin word *infusio*, meaning "pouring in" or "infusion." Other applications include parenteral nutrition, electrolyte therapy, and chemotherapy. Typically, an infusion solution is administered through a venous catheter placed in a peripheral vein. A cannula is inserted into the vein, which is then connected to the infusion bag via a tube. The infusion solution is dosed using a roller clamp, which regulates the drip rate of the infusion.

An injection, on the other hand, refers to the short-term administration of a medication or injection solution. A syringe is filled with a liquid and injected into the tissue using a needle. There are different types of injections. A subcutaneous injection is administered at a shallow angle under the skin, where a fluid depot forms and slowly spreads within the tissue. Subcutaneous injections can be self-administered by patients, usually in the abdomen, as there is a relatively large amount of fatty tissue in that area. Examples include insulin and heparin. These injections are relatively painless and have a low risk of complications. They are mainly suitable for small volumes of up to 2 ml.

Another type is the intramuscular injection, which allows for the administration of medications in volumes of up to 20 ml. Instead of the tissue, the medication is injected directly into a muscle, usually the deltoid muscle (located over the shoulder joint) or the medial gluteal muscle. Intramuscular injections are preferred when a prolonged and slow onset of action is desired. This injection method is commonly used for vaccinations, as well as for pain relievers, contraceptives, or corticosteroids.

An intravenous injection begins with a venipuncture. The effect occurs particularly quickly, and larger volumes of liquid can be administered. In many cases, a venous catheter is placed, which can be used repeatedly as an access point. Butterfly needles, such as the Wing-Flo butterfly cannulas, are often used in this context. These consist of a very fine needle and two wings that allow for precise and safe insertion. When the wings are unfolded, they can be secured to the skin with a plaster. Butterfly needles are commonly used for blood collection and are particularly gentle on the veins and less painful due to their secure fixation.

Without the right cannula, medication injection is not possible. Therefore, it is essential to always have a suitable hollow needle readily available.
