General information about the blood pressure monitor:
With the blood pressure monitor, a person’s arterial pressure can be measured externally, on the upper arm or on the wrist. Arterial blood pressure values are usually given in the non-SI unit millimetres of mercury (mmHg or Torr). The devices display the upper (systolic) and the lower (diastolic) arterial pressure.
Classic arterial pressure measurement is carried out on the upper arm using mechanical devices. A cuff is connected via tubes to an analogue pressure gauge and a rubber inflation bulb. The pressure cuff is placed on the upper arm, directly above the elbow, and inflated with the rubber bulb. When the pressure is released slowly, turbulent sounds (Korotkoff sounds) occur; using a stethoscope, these can be used to determine the systolic and diastolic arterial pressure values (auscultatory measurement).
