Appropriate Tools for Large Animal Birthing Assistance

The birth of a foal typically lasts about 30 minutes. In most cases, veterinarians do not need to intervene unless the birth does not progress normally and becomes stalled. Causes for delayed births can include weak contractions, twin pregnancies, or abnormal positioning, posture, or presentation of the calf or foal.

Extremely stable tools are required for difficult births and the extraction of deceased fetuses. Notably, obstetrical chains, ropes, and obstetrical hooks are essential in these situations. For supportive care, reliable examination equipment and consistent disinfection are also important.

Use of Birthing Chains or Birthing Ropes in Veterinary Medicine

During a normal birth, a calf or foal is typically presented with its head and legs first. Even when the position is correct, the birth can slow down significantly or even stall at this stage. In such cases, the birthing chain or birthing rope is used. The rope or chain is looped around one or both of the front limbs, and the veterinarian can apply traction in the ventral and caudal direction, in sync with the contractions of the cow or mare. Careful handling is crucial; traction should only be applied during the contractions, and no pulling should be done during the rest periods between contractions. Additional practice accessories may support safe handling during the procedure.
