What is pulse oximetry used for?

A severe lack of oxygen can be fatal and, without the aid of devices, can only be detected at a very late stage. This process is called cyanosis and describes the phenomenon where the blood flowing through the body appears bluish due to low oxygen content, causing the skin to appear bluish in certain areas. Aside from this drastic example of what low oxygen levels in the blood can lead to, a deficiency is naturally harmful to the body even before visible symptoms occur. Cells, especially in the brain, require oxygen to function properly and are highly sensitive to a lack of it. Pulse oximetry allows for the simple and reliable measurement of the oxygen-loaded red blood cells without penetrating the body of the person being examined. The desired and necessary oxygen saturation level in the blood is relatively high, with normal values ranging from 93% to 99%. Values below this range are concerning and can cause significant harm to the body. A pulse oximeter, the device used to measure the oxygen content in the blood, also records the pulse rate of the person being examined. This gives the doctor a good indication of the patient's circulatory function, providing additional insights and security.

When is pulse oximetry used?

Since pulse oximetry measures blood oxygen levels, it is essential whenever a patient's breathing is affected by medications or other factors. This is the case, for example, when a patient is under anesthesia. Other areas where pulse oximetry is particularly important include sleep laboratories, where pulse oximeters ensure that the patient’s breathing and arterial oxygen saturation are constantly monitored and maintained at healthy levels. In addition to its use in specific medical procedures, pulse oximetry can also be used for home monitoring, providing important data without significant effort from either doctors or patients, which can be used for further treatment. Special pulse oximeters for lower oxygen saturation ranges are available for patients with certain illnesses or conditions. These include children with specific heart defects that impair blood oxygen levels. Aside from their purely medical use, these devices are also used in certain sports activities, often conducted at high altitudes where reduced pressure limits oxygen uptake. In severe cases, altitude edema can occur in the brain or lungs. Athletes who use pulse oximeters include mountaineers and sport pilots flying at high altitudes. Continuous pulse oximetry ensures that their blood oxygen levels remain within a healthy range and allows for appropriate countermeasures in case of altitude sickness.
