The types of suture material are divided into two different classes: absorbable material and non-absorbable material. The term is derived from the Latin word resorbere, which means ""to absorb.""

Absorbable Suture Material

Absorbable suture material refers to the needle-thread combination that does not need to be removed after wound closure with sutures. This is particularly important for hard-to-reach body regions and organs, as it eliminates the need for a second procedure to remove the thread. Additionally, it can help avoid further pain or discomfort for the patient. Physicians differentiate between materials with either a slow or fast absorption rate. Slowly Absorbable Suture Material

A particularly slow absorption rate is often required for internal organs. Depending on the material and manufacturer, slowly absorbable suture material takes between 180 and 240 days to fully dissolve.

Quickly Absorbable Suture Material

Quickly absorbable suture material is often used for wounds that heal rapidly. This type of thread is completely dissolved within a maximum of 42 days. However, its tensile strength decreases by half after just 7 days. For both types of absorbable material, hydrolysis is responsible for the dissolution of the threads. Water molecules cause the gradual breakdown of the suture material over time.

Non-Absorbable Suture Material

Non-absorbable suture material includes all surgical sutures that need to be removed from the tissue. Common materials used include polyamide and polyester. Both materials offer high tensile strength while maintaining a very small diameter. Additionally, the suture material in our online shop varies in color and texture.
