Whether caused by an infection or an allergy, inhalation therapy with a suitable device has proven to be a successful form of treatment for respiratory problems in horses. As part of inhalation therapy, the liquids prescribed by the veterinarian (e.g. chamomile, saline solution or medication) are finely nebulised using a nebuliser. The nebulised particles are extremely small, are inhaled by the horse and thus reach the deep airways. This enables targeted treatment of the respiratory tract, as the substances used reach the affected area directly.
Compared to a human, an adult horse has lungs that are around ten times larger. It is therefore only logical that the performance and medication capacity for inhalation therapy must also be correspondingly large. At rest, a horse takes approx. 12 breaths per minute and inhales about 4 to 7 litres of air per breath. This results in an average respiratory volume of around 60–80 litres per minute. Due to these considerable air volumes, the nebuliser output must be appropriately sized. Another important point is the size of the nebulised particles. The particles must be small enough to penetrate all branches of the lungs. With particle sizes above approx. 5 µm (micrometres), only the upper airways are reached. Only smaller particles (below 5 µm) are considered respirable and can reach the deep bronchi and alveoli.
The mediware ultrasonic horse inhaler operates at a frequency that is inaudible even to horses and produces a fine aerosol mist made up of extremely small particles (approx. 4.6 µm). Combined with an inhalation bag that is easy to clean, it enables fast and effective therapy.
