Checking the fence: Attach the hook of the fence tester to the fence and press the brass tip lightly into the ground. A short circuit is simulated on the fence, the same situation as when an animal touches it.

Checking the electric fence energiser: Hold the hook and the brass tip to the energiser outputs; polarity does not need to be observed. You can immediately see what output the energiser delivers.
